It also almost took Severus Snape's life two different times:
The first, when he was a young boy of four, he didn't know about the danger and got trapped in a sinkhole while helping his mother gather valerian.
The second time a heartsick Severus, feeling he had no purpose or reason to continue living, intentionally went to the fen to end his own life, sending a Patronus to his mother.
"Mum. . . I can't go on anymore. What purpose do I have. . . I'm tired of trying, I'm tired of fighting. I just want it all to end. I remember some of the happiest times in my life were when I was little in the Verdigris Marsh, helping you gather what you needed. . . . the fen almost took me once before. I asked you why I didn't drown back then, you said it wasn't my time. My time's come. I give my life, my breath to the mire now. This wasn't your fault, it was the only way I could be free of that maniac who killed Lilyflower and Prongs. I failed them. Mum, I love you, please, always remember that. This wasn’t your fault; I did this to save all of you. The Dark Lord wants me dead as much as he does Lily’s son now, and he’ll go through anyone I love and care for to get to me. I don’t want that to happen. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time now. When you next see the Urnthatch Fen, try to forgive me, please. I have found my grave where my grave was waiting for me. Grandma Prince will take care of me."
- Severus' patronus to Eileen
Roderick Prince and Albus Dumbledore (WR) got there just in time to rescue him. Roderick told his grandson he wouldn't die alone if he did this, fully intending to follow him. That shocked Severus enough to reach for his grandfather's hand. The second their hands clasped, Dumbledore levitated them both to safety.
This incident included the only time Eileen ever slapped her son. An entry written with a shaking hand in Eileen's diary states what happened:I'm trapped in a nightmare. . . . My baby attempted suicide tonight. . . . I couldn' t confront him calmly after discovering what Dad, Headmaster Dumbledore and Severus' memories told me. He went back home and purposely got himself stuck in the fen before the tides rose, knowing that they could kill him. . . Dad managed to save him. I hauled off and slapped my boy for the first time in his life. Your purpose is to keep fighting and help take that maniac down!' I told him. 'Severus Donovan Snape, you're not a coward, we need brave wizards like you on our side. You're a Marauder, you told me. Do the Marauders give up fighting or go down fighting, like your friends Prongs and Lilyflower did?' I gave him a charmed pendant and told him never to take it off. . . . If he ever attempts anything this stupid again, the matching pendant around my neck will burn, I'll feel it and be able to get to him in time. If not me, then the Headmaster or Minerva. I know it's a long shot, but if it keeps my son alive, I'm willing to do anything at this point. I'd walk into the mouth of Hell itself if it would save him.
