Themes & Influences

The Ouroboros series is heavily influenced by Norse and British folklore/mythology and fairytales. Each of the seven casebooks in Twin Vice Paranormal Detectives are based on one or more folktales collected by the author.

The Ouroboros (Greek, meaning "tail-devouring snake"), is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon swallowing its own tail and forming a circle. The circle represents cyclicality, a theme evident in both the Harry Potter and Ouroboros series (Salazar's legacy). In addition, the Ouroboros can mean self-reflexivity; another theme evident particularly in Twin Vice where George Weasley must come to terms with Fred's death and confront himself.

The Ouroboros can also represent primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished (such as Edward Balthazar McRozen's belief that there is no such thing as coincidence in the world; every event is linked). This is also a reflection on seemingly 'fateful' meeting of Fred, Nox and George (the number "3" being a very powerful and magically charged number, mirroring the importance of the three Peverell Brothers - who essentially 'begin the Game' - as well as Harry, Ron and Hermione).
