Ophilia Karait (b. 1992) attended the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 2004 to 2011, and was sorted into Slytherin. She served as a prefect during her sixth year along with Hugh Truncher, and led the House-sorting ritual of Slytherin's Choice. She is the top student in Professor Horace Slughorn's Advanced Potions class.
She ordered the Slytherin first-years to stop talking during Headmistress Llewellyn's announcement regarding the Sorting Hat's 2009 decree. She later happened across Violet Parkinson and Teddy Lupin outside the library following the theft of Ellie Cattermole's wand, and offered to escot Violet back to the Slytherin common room. As the students of Slytherin came under attack during the rash of wand-thefts, Karait attempted to keep them from retaliating so as not to feed the negative perception of Slytherin, and made it clear that severe repercussions were in order if she discovered that the thief was, in fact, a Slytherin.
After the theft of Stephen White's wand, she gave in to the popular belief that the thief was a Slytherin, and offered a 24-hour grace period for the thief to anonymously return the wand to her. After Nagaeena Indrani was attacked with a Hair-Removal Jinx, Ophilia conceded that Slytherin could no longer allow other students to attack them with impunity. She personally cursed Annabelle Jones with a spell that turned Jones' tongue into a snake in reprisal for Jones repeatedly calling Slytherin students "snakes" and "vipers." When Parkinson was found Spello-taped to the Slytherin points-hourglass in the Great Hall on 30 October, Ophilia was the first to order her cut down. When Parkinson told Professor Longbottom that she hadn't seen her attackers, Karait escorted the first-year back to the common room before Longbottom could question her further, in order for Slytherin to exact their own vengeance.
She attended the opening Quidditch match between Slytherin and Gryffindor, a bloody game which her House lost 380-290. Later, while reading a copy of A Purely Theoretical Approach to Understanding the Dark Arts, Which Contains Absolutely No Recommendations or Endorsements for the Practice Thereof, she advised Violet to talk to Lupin, whom Violet had been ignoring since her humiliation, before the Slytherins did serious harm to him for showing up in the Slytherin dungeons looking for his cousin.
In January of 2010, in accordance with the Zero Toleration Policy, Karait and Truncher helped Professor Slughorn to search the Slytherin dormitories for any contraband, and was pleased to find only one serious infraction. Later, she substituted for Slughorn in a Hufflepuff/Ravenclaw double Potions class. She instructed the class to study a unit on poisons from their textbooks, after which they could earn House-points by identifying a variety of poisons by taste, and that only after correctly identifying each poison could they have the antidote. Dewey Diggory successfully identified moonseed poison, but Gilbert Zirkle failed to identify his sample and appeared to suffer greatly until Karait informed him that the "poisons" were nothing more than water enchanted to taste like particular poisons.
She was among the the small group of students who Professor Slughorn considered capable of brewing a Paralysing Potion for Teddy Lupin. At the end of his first year, Lupin admitted to Parkinson that it had in fact been Karait who had produced the potion for him, in exchange for a favor-to-be-named-later.
During the Goblin Invasion of Hogwarts in June of 2010, Karait feigned unconsciousness in order to avoid being taken hostage by Slipfang's forces. As a result, she was able to borrow the Marauder's Map from Lupin and use it to rescue Truncher and the Slytherin Quidditch team from the Quidditch pitch with help from Professor Sinistra. She then returned with her Housemates to the Castle where she helped Harry Potter and his Aurors to evacuate the unconscious students from the Great Hall before aiding Potter in the rescue of Lupin, Chloe Grey, Connor and Colleen McCormack, Aisha Allouzi, and Deana Forte.
In the aftermath of the Invasion, Karait informed Potter that she intended to apply for Aurorship after graduating from Hogwarts.
