- "Rise child, you shall call yourself Norbert Peter Venczel no longer. No, from this day forth, you shall be known as Norbert Gellert Grindelwald."
- —Norbert being rechristened by his great-grandfather.
In 2013, he discovered his wizarding ancestry. His mother was the granddaughter of Gellert Grindelwald, one of the most powerful Dark Lords of all time. Upon hearing of this, he began research on his great-grandfather, finally discovering that he was still incarcerated in Nurmengard, the same prison he himself built to contain his enemies. Breaking in to the prison, he talked with his great-grandfather, learning about his past. With Gellert's blessing, Norbert changed his name and transferred to Durmstrang, the same school which educated his great-grandfather. He was then placed in Kelstron, Gellert Grindelwald's dom, which prided itself on its Integrity & Perseverance. Because of his surname, Norbert was looked on with suspicion.
Between 2014 and 2017, he made frequent trips to Nurmengard, using a secret passage to sneak into Gellert's cell. Confident he passed on all usable knowledge to his protege, Gellert asked Norbert to end his life and demolish the prison. Honouring his final wish, Norbert ended his great-grandfather's life with the killing curse, allowing him to finally rest in peace, and using an earthquake spell, caused the cliff on which Nurmengard was built on to give way, demolishing the prison.
