Morticaine is an extremely deadly poison. It is odorless, colorless, and retains its potency when dissolved in another liquid. It causes death within several seconds of being ingested. It is also impossible to develop a resistance to morticaine; the celebrated sorceror Merlin was killed attempting to do this.
The brewing process of morticaine is incredibly diffucult, containing 307 steps over a six month maturation period. Because of this, morticaine is very rarely used and fairly unknown to most wizards and witches. The active ingredient in morticaine is a fermented extract of the pable plant.
Preventive antidotes to morticaine exist, but like the poison, are extremely rare and difficult to concoct.
Morticaine was first developed by the great alchemist and potion-master, Salazar Slytherin.
