James Potter, 20th Duke of Inverness (27 March, 1960 – 31 October, 1981), also known as Prongs, was a Scottish pure-blood wizard and the only son of Fleamont and Euphemia Potter. As such, he was a member of the noble branch of the Potter family. After leaving Hogwarts after his seventh year, he married Lily Evans, in realily Maria Anemas, the daughter of the late Roman emperor Alexander IV Anemas and his wife, Maria III, the Queen of Portugal.
After the birth of their son, the two were targetted by Voldemort, leading to the decision of hiding in Britain, keeping Voldemort away from the empire. The deaths of both Charlus Potter and Alfred Potter, who knew the location of Lily and James, led to them resorting to the Fidelius Charm, using Peter Pettigrew as a secret keeper. However, Pettigrew had been an agent of Voldemort for some time, and he betrayed their location to the dark wizard.
As a result of this, James was tragically murdered by Voldemort on Hallowe'en in 1981, along with his wife while they were trying to protect their infant son.
As James was matrilineally married to Lily, his death led to the extinction of the Henrian branch of the House of Potter, and the loss of all its titles and possessions to the House of Anemas, of which Harry, James's son, was a member of. For the few months of his marriage, James was also jure uxoris Prince Royal of Portugal and Duke of Braganza.
