During a trip to Persia in the summer of 1955, he was given several rare Whomping Willow seeds, one of which he planted at Hogwarts to see if it would grow in such a cool climate. The tree lived on Hogwarts grounds for several years until a 1964 fire destroyed it. Fortunately, Beery had kept the remaining seeds, and he provided one to his successor, Pomona Sprout, and advised her on its care. This Willow would later be moved to guard the entrance to the secret passage to the Shrieking Shack.
Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts
Beery had long been a theatre enthusiast and directed several amateur theatricals during his time at Hogwarts. In 1963, he was looking forward to retirement when a friend invited him to join the staff of the newly established Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he taught until his death from pneumonia in 1970.
