Charity Anne Burbage (18971968) is a minor character in the Epithalamium series of stories by Squibstress. She taught Muggle Studies at Hogwarts from 1937 to 1968.

Early life

Charity Anne Burbage was born to Muggle parents in 1897. She became aware that she was a witch when, in the summer of 1908, she received a visit from then-Deputy Headmaster of Hogwarts, Armando Dippet, bearing a letter inviting her to attend the school of magic.

Charity's parents agreed, and she attended Hogwarts from 1908 to 1915 as a member of Hufflepuff House.

After leaving school, Charity went to work in the Wizengamot Administration Services department in the Ministry of Magic, eventually rising to become the Director of that department.

Illegitimate son

Charity had remained close to her parents and lived with them in Muggle suburb of Basingstoke. In 1934, she met a business friend of her father's, Christopher Robinson, at a retirement dinner given for Charity's father. Although Robinson was married, the two began an affair that would last until 1936, when Charity discovered she was pregnant. Robinson was unwilling to leave his wife, and he and Charity split up.

When her pregnancy became apparent, Charity was pushed out of her job at the conservative Ministry. She gave birth to a baby boy, whom she named Charles, on 28 November 1936.

Although her parents were sympathetic, Charity became increasingly desperate to find work, not wanting herself or her son to be a burden to them, as they were not wealthy and were growing old. She appealed to Griselda Marchbanks, an elder of the Wizengamot with whom she had enjoyed a good working relationship, asking if she knew of anyone who might be willing to hire her.

Muggle Studies professor

Marchbanks convinced now-Headmaster Armando Dippet to take Charity on as the school's first Professor of Muggle Studies for the newly-created course.

By 1942, both of Charity's parents had died, and she moved with her son to a small cottage in Hogsmeade. Once Charles had grown up and moved out, Charity would let her extra room to lodgers, including Minerva McGonagall, who took the room when she first began teaching at Hogwarts in 1956.

Charity stayed in her post until her death of natural causes in 1968. She was succeeded by her son, Charles, and eventually, by her granddaughter, also named Charity Burbage.
