"Yes he was a good Minister; Bartemius. Poor guy was offed by his own son; his assistant found him face-down in his porridge. Junior was a Death Eater see, his dad pretty much put him under permanent house arrest. Well, one day he broke out and...well, you know the rest."
—Sirius Black describing Barty Crouch Sr.
Bartemius Alastor "Barty" Crouch Senior (17 November 1939 – 18 June 1995) was a Ministry official who served as Minister for Magic from 1983 until his death in 1995 at the hands of his son, Barty Crouch Jr. He began his ministry career as an Auror and became Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement during the British Wizarding Civil War. Unlike most British wizards, Crouch did not attend Hogwarts, and instead opted for a home education.

Towards the end of the war, when the Ministry fell to Lord Voldemort and Minister Bagnold had been murdered, he was arrested and sent to Azkaban by the imperiused puppet-Minister R.J. Herneus. He spent three months in prison before the war ended and he was freed. He returned to his job as Head of the DMLE and was the first post-war elected Minister, taking over in 1983. During his time as Minister, Barty managed to hide his son away in order to spare him from Azkaban. For 14 years he kept his son under the Imperius curse at his home.

Crouch was eventually found dead in his office in 1995. He had been murdered by his son after he awoke from the Imperius curse placed on him. Barty Crouch Jr. was found only days later, wounded and half-insane, and was given the Dementor's Kiss on June 24, 1995. Although Crouch Sr. was an effective Minister, the truth about him harboring a Death Eater in his house for over a decade made him lose much of his popularity after his death.
