The Americas Cup is a Quidditch competition held biennially between the national teams of Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

History

The Americas Cup originated as a best-of-three series between the United States and Mexico that was first played in 1816. The tourament was expanded in 1848 to a best-of-five series. In 1870, the Cup was expanded to incorporate Canada, at which point the current seven-game round-robin system was adopted.

The Cup has been cancelled only twice: in 1846 and 1978.

Structure

The current round-robin system, adopted in the expansion of 1870 that incorporated the Canadian national team, consists of seven games played over two weeks. The first game is played on the first Monday in July, with subsequent games following on Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. The final championship game is played on that subsequent Saturday.

Match-ups: Games 1 through 6

  • Game One is played between the two losing teams of the previous year, while the reigning champion is given a bye; of those two losing teams, homefield advantage is given to the team with the highest points-total from the previous year's tournament.
  • Game Two is played between the winner of Game One and the previous year's champion, with homefield advantage going to the previous year's champion.
  • Game Three is played between the previous year's champion and the loser of Game One, with homefield advantage going to the loser of Game One.
  • Game Four is a repeat of Game One's match-up, with homefield advantage going to the team with the lowest points-total from the previous year's tournament.
  • Game Five is a repeat of Game Two's match-up, with homefield advantage going to the winner of Game One.
  • Game Six is a repeat of Game Three's match-up, with homefield advantage going to the previous year's champion.

Match-up: Game Seven

The two teams with the best records through Games One through Six compete in Game Seven, with homefield advantage going to the team with the highest points-total in the current tournament. In the rare event that all three teams come out of the round-robin tournament with identical records of two-and-two (as occurred, most recently, in the 1932 Americas Cup), the team with the lowest points-total is eliminated, while the remaining two teams face off in the tournament finale.
